Halloween spooky ambiance is LIFE
I was reading a fic and the descriptions of the home were OVERBOARD. so detailed, I am sure this is the author's fantasy kitchen and life had she won the lottery.
I didn't get far into it before I realized my napping window was over. still exhausted, I took MJ to the park. then I came home and started cooking. I was worried at every step in the process, but not only did the pancit turn out perfectly, a Filipino told me it was the best and ate several helpings in front of me lol.
I was in her beautiful dream home. Holy crap. I have much wealthier friends, and ones with great taste. This was perfect. It's not even a huge home, but they have 4 kids. The pantry actually spanned the whole side of the house, running behind the oven with two doors on either side. still not ostentatious, but a nice feature. everything was clean and there wasn't much clutter, just some baby supplies and lotion on the credenza. But the backyard had a really cool design. They had it added when they liked it in another much more expensive house. It was a modern pool and hot tub that were elevated but there was a recessed firepit. not really kid friendly and definitely not a great idea with alcohol, but it did look really cool.
they also had a HUGE outdoor dining room and living room with a wraparound couch. and lots of really neat details everywhere, like an umbrella stand in the pool and piped in music in the bathroom.
everything was really tastefully decorated and immaculate for having 4 active kiddos. the couple are executives at a flashy company and in fact Jason came home dressed in an expensive ass suit and gave me a big hug. I teased him for being so dressed up but I think he had run to work. he came back pretty quickly in our camp spirit tee and board shorts.
and he and his wife literally come and scrub toilets for us at camp. so obviously they are hard working in all areas of life. it was SO NICE to see hospice fam in normal life. the work we do is SO HARD. and we did do a little trauma session where we reminisced about our favorite campers and the incredibly fucked up circumstances they came to be with us "oh yeah, she was great. her mom drowned." and "he wrote the sweetest poem and it was published in the news article about the trial for his dad making his kids dismember their mom".
so yeah, my people.
there were some other corporate volunteers from the host's firm, the hospice volunteers and nurses/staff and a bunch of kids splashing in the pools. everyone is so smart and successful and polished and obviously some of the best of humanity. it was so nice to not talk about dumbass problems (Ariel and I had a loooooong call yesterday about her psycho family and exes after a long format text day about Domenica's latest ongoing mental health crises). Just a nice break with nice people, great food.
Trish actually packed 3 Cane's chicken tenders for MJ lol. made MJ's whole day. and everyone asked about her, as she is also from hospice (her old mom worked and retired from there before being a patient).
holy crap this pancit IS good. I'm eating it cold and it's wonderful in every way--the bitterness and sweetness from the orange juice, roasted garlic and peanuts, the saltiness of the vegan fish sauce and soy sauce, the spicy beyond sausage (I'm so glad I used that because I got it at Dollar Tree and it was a WIN) and on and on. I used a LOT of seasoning and sauces but when it came time to mix the raw veggies with the cooked noodles and cooked peppers and sausage...I just thought it looked dry. so I made a good 16oz of vinegar, more fish and soy sauce and a lime with a little sweetener and HOLY CRAP. DELICIOUS!!! And the fresh cabbage and other veggies were crunchy, the herbs just right and so much smokey toothy yum with the peanuts and garlic. Those were the last of my George Washington's Mt Vernon Virginia peanuts too <3
I am very grateful to Mr. Manabat for taking the time over the phone to tell me how to properly make adobong mani and other Filipino food. Really over the years I have made so many time's other friend's grandma's recipes. It makes them immortal! Taiwanese Buddhist (vegan) wonton dumplings, corn tamales, aloo gobi, Persian rice.
I know everyone has always raved about my food and that's mostly mom and Grandma Lillo (Trupo). tho Yan Can Cook on PBS definitely changed my life in middle school with introducing the rice cooker.
we did talk an awful lot about air fryers and instantpots at that potluck today lol
I also drank not one but TWO drinks. maybe why I am now getting a second wind. Whenever I have drank in the past, I end up reorganizing the garage and waking up super early the next day. which is good, because Ariel wants to go to church with me! so I gotta get up sooooo much earlier. and lately I have been STRUGGLING to get out of bed.
Ironically and weirdly, the UU church is having a service specifically on non profit accountants. um, that's me. that's what I do. so I will def watch on youtube later.
I need to prep and re-read my lesson plan for Grace. I have a feeling with Ariel there I won't have as much time for lesson planning and panicking like I normally do lol
ok, my clothes are in the dryer so I have plenty of time to go cook MJ dinner, take her for a walk and get set up for tomorrow. I cleaned a little this morning but I didn't even unload my trunk from Thursday!!! doubting I will bake tonight like I intended. I spent enough time in the kitchen honestly. and I had Tim restock all the Sunday School snacks, so I should just not stress about it. even tho one of the crafts was indeed pretzels. Episcopals looooooooove pretzels on a Philly scale.
I just need to get enough done to be ready for this week. I have several little easy items on my to do list that have not been to done ALL SUMMER. and it's about to be monsoon season frfr--rain for the next two weeks. I am thrilled. I want to be able to enjoy it, and stay home and watch GOMENS at night.
also THE AUDACITY of this ant bite. It has been like an angry red marble for 2 weeks and now that the blister finally drained yesterday and I was able to get medicine in, it healed in less than a day. I really was about to go to the dr over this.
ok, feeling the heat--I had mentioned to my hospice fam that my hot neighbor and I had gone on some dates but when he asked me out again I was already in bed ready to sleep. one of the husbands shouted "YOU BETTER STAY UP LATE" and it just cracked me up. but I might bring him some pancit tomorrow, we'll see
if by the time i drop off Ariel and get home I don't end up lying in bed again. this is my one 'day off' and here i am sitting at my desk typing away like I do every other day of the workweek, sobs.
